1. Your body is part of the suspension (active riding)

Unlike a car, where you sit passively, riding a quad calls for your whole body. It's called "active riding". When you turn left, lean your upper body slightly into the inside of the turn to counter the centrifugal force and keep the vehicle stable. When climbing a hill, lean forward towards the handlebars to load the front wheels. When descending, shift your weight back.

2. Your thumb sets the pace

On a quad you don't apply throttle by twisting the grip like on a motorcycle, but by pressing a small lever with your right thumb. It's designed this way so you don't accidentally add throttle if a bump jolts you. The rule for beginners: be gentle with your thumb. 3. Look where you want to go

This is a basic rule of motorcycling and off-road riding. Your brain subconsciously steers the vehicle in the direction you're looking. If there's a big rock or a deep hole ahead of you, don't fix your gaze on it — you'll probably hit it dead on. Instead, look at the ideal line around the obstacle and the quad will naturally follow.

4. Keep a safe distance

The dust and mud thrown up by the vehicle in front can dramatically reduce visibility. That's why you should always keep at least 15–20 metres between you and the vehicle ahead. That gives you enough time to spot an obstacle and slow down safely.
